Lesson 3
Lesson introduction (5min):
Welcome and announcement: updates to daily agenda. Announce required supplies for the day and activities. I will update the students on any school announcements they are required to know. Following school announcements, I will proceed to make my classroom announcements which cover, last class meeting procedures, today's agenda, and upcoming assignments. Furthermore, the days agenda will be further explained and will introduce the content standards for the lesson.
Lecture (15 min.):
The lecture will cover the concept of nationalism and the affects it had during WWI.
Create their own Newspaper (10 min.):
Students will be given ten minutes to work independently on creating a newspaper article of their own. The newspaper is required to contain, a grasping headline, utilization of yellow journalism ("exaggerate the truth"), and one paragraph in length (4-5 sentences minimum). As a writer, you (the student) are trying to unite the country towards one cause, to support our soldiers who are "fighting to make the world safe for democracy." I will pass out one sheet of small construction paper where you will create your newspaper, if you choose to make it look appealing I encourage it.
Share the Headlines (10 min.):
After completing their newspaper assignment, students by order of their rows (first person in the row, then the person behind, etc.) will enthusiastically read all about it!!! The student must try to sell us their newspaper and guilt us to our patriotic duties as Americans (ex: influencing citizens to buy war bonds, support the war, create victory gardens, voluntary food rationing, sympathize with our soldiers, create hatred towards the enemy "Beat back the HUN" (dehumanize the enemy). Students not presenting will listen and contribute when called upon, this time is reserved for the person presenting.
Closure (5 min):
Ten word Summary: Using all ten words, students will give a succinct summary of what they now understand to be nationalism. Upon completing the summary, students will remain in their seats until the bell dismisses them. On their way out I will have a set location by the door where they will drop off their writings, as a ticket out.
